Diesel trucks and buses emitted 17% more toxic particulates and 13% more smog-forming nitrogen oxides (NOx) in 1997 than they did in 1970 when the Clean Air Act was passed. Non-road diesel sources emitted 35% more NOx and 40% more particulates in 1997 than in 1970.
