The average fuel efficiency of cars in the U.S. today is 20 miles/gallon. A car that gets 20 mpg produces 6 tons of CO2 each year. If we improve fuel efficiency by 20% (24 mpg), we save one ton of CO2 per car. With more than 230 million registered vehicles in the U.S., that's a savings of over 230 million tons of CO2 annually!
